Abstract
Our reasons for writing this book are that for some years we have been building Knowledge-Based Systems (KBS) in conjunction with practising designers. During the development of these systems it has been found that many of the “textbook” approaches for the development of KBS are less than ideal for design systems. To enable useful software to be developed we have had to devise our own methodology. Having been through this time-consuming and demanding experience, we felt that it would be beneficial to pass on the techniques which we have developed to others who wish to work in this area.
