Transcervical Tubal Endoscopy: Falloposcopy

Abstract

Rapid advances in the miniaturisation of fibre-optic and cannulation devices for use in small hollow organ systems have occurred in the past decade. Many of these devices have been pioneered in the cardiovascular, neurovascular and urological fields. During the past 5 years great interest has developed for their use in the female reproductive system. Until recently, the only section of the human female genital tract that had not been explored by endoscopy was the oviduct (Kerin et al. 1990a) extending from the uterotubal ostium to the ampullary-isthmic junction. This narrowest and most medial segment is vulnerable to pathogenic organisms responsible for pelvic inflammatory disease. Oviductal disease is a major cause of infertility and ectopic pregnancy.
