Plain Bearing Stabilisation Using Swirl Injection

Abstract

The design of stable journal bearings for rotating machinery is conventionally achieved by profiled lobes or tilting pad assemblies. A different approach is aimed at reducing the de-stabilising cross-stiffness by flow modification in a plain bearing. A theoretical analysis is confirmed by experimental work on a small test rig. Further development work would appear to be justified in order to obtain the full economic benefit.
