Abstract

Thermosets are polymerised and processed in a single operation which involves the irreversible transformation of a resin with a low molecular weight into a network polymer. The crosslinking reaction is dependent upon the type of resin, the relative concentrations of the curing agent, and also upon the temperature. One aspect of fundamental importance in this process is the exothermic nature of the curing reaction which can give rise to substantial temperature gradients and even to excessively high temperatures, which may cause degradation of the material.
