Health psychology is in vogue at present. A number of new journals devoted to this physical subspecialty have appeared and health psychologists are springing up in profusion. Diseases which have putative psychological risk factors, usually in the form of stress, are legion. Coronary heart disease (CHD) has a special place in this endeavour. The contribution of temperamental factors to the aetiology of heart disease is a well-researched area, and the hypothesis that personality attributes have a bearing on the state of the vasculature predates the establishment of psychosomatic medicine as a recognised area of study.
