Abstract

The management of patients with suspected or confirmed intracranial tumour may be considered in several stages. In practice these are integrated and combined and include:

  1. 1.

Detection or confirmation that a structural abnormality is present.

  2. 2.

Localization and assessment of the extent of any abnormality.

  3. 3.

Characterization of the abnormality and, in particular, the distinction of tumours from non-tumour processes.

  4. 4.

Assessment of the nature of any tumour.

  5. 5.

Facilitation of additional diagnostic procedures, and planning for surgery or other types of therapy.

  6. 6.

    Monitoring of response to therapy:

    1. a)

assessment as to whether or not therapy is adequate,

    2. b)

indications for the additional therapy, and

    3. c)

documentation of complications and their response to appropriate treatment.
