Abstract
The primary meaning of words like thirst and hunger is dispositional. They refer to causal structures in the behaviour of the moment. This is a logical prerequisite of their various usages in ordinary speech (Ryle 1949; Wittgenstein 1953; Peters 1954). It is also the key to measurement of influences on drinking.
