Abstract

The clinical and histological data on the bone cement—bone interface can be investigated by animal experiments, in vitro models or studies of retrieved postmortem specimens of replaced joints (Draenert 1981). The in vitro model has shown that there is no gap between the metal rod and the bone cement, but there is one between bone cement and the bone. Animal experiments have shown that this gap was filled initially by a haematoma. Later, regenerating vessels appeared, followed by new bone formation. Four weeks after the implantation, the gap was bridged by newly formed bone. The first framework was of concentrically reinforced woven bone which was converted to compact bone by mature lamellae. This adaptation and the remodelling was completed in 2 years (Draenert 1981).
