Parasitic Zoonoses with a Canine Reservoir: An Unacceptable Human Health Hazard

Abstract

Human parasitoses (and other infections) which possess a reservoir in the canine population (Cook 1989) have received extensive coverage in the medical literature of the USA; in the UK awareness of this group of diseases seems less acute. In this chapter, I attempt to summarize those parasitic infections which maintain a zoonotic presence in ‘man’s best friend’. Dog populations of the UK and USA have been estimated at 6 and 55 million respectively (Baxter 1984a; Elliot et al. 1985). Problems are not, however, confined to the Western world; for example, in Nigeria dogs are also an important source of human disease (Okoh 1983).
