Abstract
Despite restructuring procedures, which were so full of promise, short batch, customer-led production has run into difficulties. There are two obvious starting points from which this can be countered through the use of modern developments in computers. The first one is recognizing that an attempt to operate the highly capital-intensive equipment on a completely automated basis, is worth risking, at least for one period of the day. Doing this would increase the time for which it is used without additional expenditure on personnel, and thus reduce the hourly labour costs and the unit costs of production; a situation which is termed “the ghost shift” in business jargon.
