Lesions of the Internal Auditory Meatus and Posterior Cranial Fossa: the Investigation and Differential Diagnosis of Acoustic Neuroma

  • Chapter

Abstract

No aspect of imaging in ENT practice has changed so much in the last ten years as the investigations for acoustic neuroma. Yet despite the tremendous advances in imaging, there is still no simple, readily available, cheap, non-invasive test, either clinical or radiological, which will conclusively confirm or exclude the presence of a small tumour in the internal auditory meatus. Consequently, a great deal of time is spent investigating patients with unilateral signs and symptoms confined to the VHIth nerve.
