Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the growth characteristics of groups of the same boys and girls repeatedly (once per school term, i.e. 3 times per year) throughout the entire course of pubertal growth. It was planned that children from as broad a cross-section of social and environmental backgrounds as possible would be included but, as indicated below, the children participating were not fully representative because the prime importance of gaining optimal cooperation and continuing involvement inevitably led to biased selection both of the schools chosen, and of the children within the schools (whose participation was entirely voluntary).
