Abstract

Ectopic ureteroceles were discussed in Chapter 1, but more details may be given. There are two main ways of dealing with an ectopic ureterocele on the first occasion. A conservative operation can be performed where the upper pole of the kidney is removed with its ureter down as far as possible within the confines of a loin incision or a partial nephro-ureterectomy can be performed with a radical excision of the ureterocele and attention to the other ureters if necessary. There has been much debate as to which is the best approach and when each operation is indicated. In the short operation the lower part of the ureter is left open. It is not tied off but a drain is put down to it. On the next occasion that the bladder fills, the ureterocele will be squashed and its contents emptied upwards.
