Abstract
Visual impairment is a particular problem in old age with some 70% of those on the blind register being aged over 70 years. Blindness limits independence and is as common a cause of old people being housebound as is stroke, heart disease or lung disorders. Clearly, a lesser degree of visual loss will impair quality of life.
