Abstract

Interest in the role of the posterior intervertebral joints as a source of back pain has undergone a revival in the last decade, but the original ideas date back to the early part of the century. The earliest writers implicated the facet joints as a cause of sciatica either in the form of a neuralgia from vertebral arthritis chiefly involving the articular facets (Putti 1927) or by creating nerve root pressure (Ghormley 1933). It was Badgley (1941) who suggested that irritation of the capsule of the lumbar facets could produce referred pain through the dermatome of the lumbar nerve roots by passage of the stimuli from the facets through the posterior primary ramus.
