Air travel is already very safe, due to the professionalism of all those involved, the standards applied, and increasing systems reliability. However, if nothing else is changed, the more aircraft that fly in a given volume of airspace, the greater the probability of conflict. The overwhelming need for increased airspace capacity in Europe has necessitated a fresh approach to Air Traffic Control (ATC) from the fundamentals of System Engineering and Project Management, to the development of a whole new Concept of Operation.
