Abstract

The tunica vaginalis testis consists of a layer of mesothelium which covers much of the testis and which is in continuity with the mesothelium forming the lining of the investing sac. It was originally part of the peritoneal cavity, but in the development and descent of the testis, which remains throughout a retroperitoneal structure, the connecting canal (the processus vaginalis) becomes sealed off, thus isolating the tunica vaginalis from the peritoneal cavity (Fig. 7.1).
