Abstract
In Chapter 1, when discussing the distribution of pharmacological receptors in the human urinary tract, it was pointed out that our studies on tissue removed during operations for benign enlargement of the prostate showed that there was a rich alpha-adrenergic receptor content in the enucleated hyperplastic tissue, and an even higher concentration of alpha-adrenergic receptors in the surgical capsule of the prostate. The beta-adrenergic receptor response in each of them was, for practical purposes, negligible (Caine et al. 1975). This academic finding ultimately led to the development of a pharmacological treatment for benign prostatic hypertrophy, which has gained increasing acceptance in recent years.
