Abstract

The order Thysanoptera (meaning fringe-winged), known as thrips, comprise about 5000 species with a worldwide distribution. Although mainly phytophagous, some species are predatory on other arthropods and others can occasionally cause lesions on man’s skin. They are the smallest winged insects, their size in temperate climates being 1- 2 mm long, although they have a range from 0.5 to 14 mm in the tropics. The principal suborders and classification are shown in Table 4.1, whilst Table 4.2 indicates those species said to have caused human reactions. Interested readers who want a comprehensive account of thrips should consult Lewis (1973), from whose work the following details have been compiled.
