Infestation with Cheyletiellid Mites

  • Chapter

Abstract

Parasite infestation of domestic pets is becoming increasingly recognised as a source of human skin disease. Cheyletiellid mites are the commonest such parasites at present. They were first reported as attacking man by Lomholt (1918) in Copenhagen on the owners of infested cats. It has since been established that dogs, cats and rabbits are the principal hosts of the mites of the genus Cheyletiella, three of which are pathogenic to man. A knowledge of their morphology and their relationship to their natural hosts is valuable because accurate diagnosis and management of the human eruption is nearly always dependent on finding the parasite on the patients’ pets.
