Abstract
Three major types of tumour arise within, or in relation to, the pituitary fossa, viz: pituitary adenomas from the anterior pituitary, craniopharyngiomas or suprasellar cysts from epithelial elements related to the pituitary, and gliomas of the posterior pituitary which are usually well-differentiated astrocytomas. The latter are rare tumours and behave in a similar way to hypothalamic or cerebral astrocytomas.
