Abstract

Techniques employing radioisotopes form the basis of most clinical measurements of differential function in the renal tract. In many situations Nuclear Medicine also offers the most sensitive practical method of assessing global function. Processes which influence function can be assessed separately; these include renal blood flow, glomerular filtration and proximal tubular function or mass. In addition neuromuscular activity of the renal pelvis and ureter, vesicoureteric reflux, bladder emptying and urinary residual volume can be evaluated.
