Abstract

PPV proved to be an important addition to the choice of procedures available to the vitreo-retinal surgeon in the management of RRD. PPV should not just be regarded as a procedure to follow failed conventional surgery, but may well be the operation of first choice. Case mixes will be dissimilar between various centres but in our two units vitrectomy is performed as a first operation for RRD in 30%-40% of cases. The indications for PPV for RRD are separated into two groups:
  1. 1.

    RRD uncomplicated by significant PYR.

  2. 2.

RRD complicated by PVR where the main reason for PPV is to solve the problems caused by the peri-retinal membranes.
