Abstract

Until recently, machine tools were largely constructed as serial kinematic chains connecting the workpiece to the tool. By far the largest majority of machine tools are of the Cartesian type, with two or three linear slides arranged in a mutually perpendicular fashion. This basic type of machine tool has been in widespread development and use for nearly 200 years. During that time, this machine configuration has become well understood and now represents a very mature technology. Continuous improvements in technology and manufacturing methods have led to the high levels of performance expected of modern machine tools.
