Abstract

This paper proposes, Mobile VISION, a PHS mobile communication system for simultaneous voice and image transmission. A trial system is developed to realize mobile multimedia communication. It consists of mobile terminals connected to a PHS 32 kbit/s digital bearer network and center equipment connected to ISDN. Experiments confirm that the trial system can simultaneously transmit voice, with the same quality as PSTN telephones, and motion pictures with the frame rate of about one per second, image size of 160 x 120 pixels, and compression rate of 4%. This system was used by the security department of the Organizing Committee for the XVIII Olympic Winter Games for monitoring remote sites.
