Abstract

Many patients with severe pancreatitis have evidence of a systemic illness, characterised by varying degrees of respiratory and renal impairment. In the most severe cases, death results from multiple organ failure. Recent prospective clinical trials in the UK indicate that early mortality from organ failure continues to account for around 40% of all deaths in acute pancreatitis.
