Abstract
The first documented medical description in the available literature of a penetrating injury of the neck comes from the discovery and translation of a 5000-year-old Egyptian papyrus. 1 In this, Imhotep (the greatest of ancient Egypt’s physician-cum-architects who also designed and built the step pyramid of Saqqara), vividly described a knife-inflicted oesophageal perforation, which resulted in a demonstrable mucocutaneous fistula.
