Abstract

Immediately after birth all neonates are examined, usually by a midwife, for gross congenital abnormalities or birth trauma. Premature and small-for-gestationalage infants may need transfer to a Special Care Baby Unit. All babies are re-examined by a paediatrician in a first day check for more subtle abnormalities such as cardiac murmurs, dislocated hips, or dysmorphic features suggestive of various syndromes.
