Abstract
Macao is a Chinese territory currently administered by the Portuguese Government, with a population of about 420 000, more than 95% of whom are Chinese. Cardiovascular disease is the predominant cause of death, and lung cancer is the predominant cause of death from cancer. Until this survey was conducted, there was no reliable information on tobacco use in Macao. The objectives of the survey were to identify the prevalence of tobacco use, the characteristics of tobacco consumers, relevant opinions on and attitudes to tobacco use and knowledge about the health effects of tobacco use in Macao among the population aged > 15 years.
