Abstract

About 70% of all smokers see a physician every year (Ockene, 1987). The consultation is therefore a unique opportunity for soctors to motivate and help smokers to quit. Even simple questions like “Do you smoke?” and “Would you like to quit?” have an effect on smoking behaviour when they come from a doctor (Russel et al., 1979). Many doctors would like to do more but consider that they lack suitable training.
