Abstract

The number of deaths from lung cancer in Taiwan has increased fivefold during the past 24 years, and this has become the commonest cancer over the past 15 years. Yet the public and health professionals are not alarmed by this dramatic increase, and hence there is no near-term prospect for a reversal of this trend. We have analysed the causes of this increase and the reasons for the apathy about a situation that is nearing a crisis.
