Behavioural approaches to smoking cessation

Abstract

Tobacco advertising is an example of an attempt to influence behaviour. Whether it or any other approach influences people to change their behaviour depends on a number of factors, including the way the individual perceives the approach and whether or not opportunities arise for change to occur. Behavioural interventions focus on the environment and the individual’s thoughts and actions in relation to the environment. Behavioural approaches based on social learning theory stem from the observation that behavioural change is difficult: environment influences lifestyle choices, while at the same time lifestyle choices influence the environment (Orlandi, 1996).
