Abstract

Data on the prevalence of smoking in Cuba in 1978–95 were obtained from three sources: for 1978, from the Ministry of Internal Commerce; for 1980–90, from the Cuban Institute for Research and Orientation of Internal Demand; and for 1995, from the National Institute of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology, the Ministry of Health and the National Statistics Office. National surveys were conducted by three institutions, using representative sampling techniques in which current smokers were defined as daily smokers at the time of the survey. For reliable comparisons of prevalence over time, the same sampling frame was used in all of the surveys.
