Abstract
The increasing interest in the management of osteoporosis has been stimulated by awareness of the socioeconomic cost of osteoporotic fractures, the development of techniques for the diagnosis and monitoring of the condition and the introduction of effective treatments which prevent bone loss and decrease the risk of fractures. The development of dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) techniques in particular, has allowed the accurate and precise measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) at the major sites of fracture, such as the spine and hip. DXA bone density measurements are therefore being used increasingly for the diagnosis of osteoporosis and monitoring the response to treatment.
