Diaphyseal and Metaphyseal Fractures of the Humerus

  • Chapter
Orthofix External Fixation in Trauma and Orthopaedics

Abstract

Fractures of the humerus are normally treated conser-vatively.1,2 The need for surgical treatment arises in cases where the fracture is difficult to reduce by closed means (e.g. fractures with a butterfly fragment and fractures in obese patients), fractures which have redisplaced following cast treatment, or fractures in polytraumatized patients where bulky forms of stabilization could interfere with nursing care. In addition to the above, there is general agreement that surgery is indicated for unstable fractures, open fractures and fractures associated with major skin and soft tissue injuries which need constant observation and attention.
