Abstract

This and the three chapters that follow are really a single chapter divided into four, simply in order to have chapters of a reasonable length. The same practical example is used to illustrate the principles discussed in all four. In all of them, we shall explore the fundamental principles of business and finance by looking, step by step, at different kinds of transactions, their financial implications, their effect on wealth, and how they are recorded or accounted for. Above all, we shall be using examples that are familiar to all of us because they concern our own lives.
