Abstract
Before the era of CCDs, measuring the positions of new asteroids and comets was a tedious business involving the careful inspection of delicate negatives and time-consuming measurements with a mechanical “measuring engine.” Now, with the appropriate software and a few clicks of the mouse, a precise measurement of the object can be determined with reference to dozens of background stars from the Hubble Guide star catalogue.
