Abstract
Cape Breton is an island off the easternmost tip of North America, attached by a causeway to mainland Nova Scotia, Canada. The main population centre, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM, also known as Sydney, the name of its largest individual settlement), is at the easternmost tip of the island, reflecting its origins as a European-facing seaport and supplier of coal, and then steel, to Europe and especially Great Britain. The CBRM has a population of 125,000 out of the total island population of 175,000, and a provincial Nova Scotia population of approximately 850,000. Sydney is some 275 miles (5 hours by car) from the provincial capital, Halifax (population 350,000), which is a regional service and professional hub. The closest major urban centre is Montreal, some 800 miles west, or Boston, some 800 miles (1250 kilometers) to the southwest.
