Agent-Mediated Architectures

Part of the Applied Computing book series (APPLCOMP)

Ambitious efforts to automate and optimize electronic business-to-consumer transactions gradually transfer certain tasks to digital agents, the fourth and last stage of Web evolution as introduced in Section 2.2.1 (Glushko et al. 1999, 108). Modern information retrieval and research into complex negotiations pioneered the application of agent-mediated architectures (Maglio and Barrett 1997, 6ff.; Tu et al. 1999). By further increasing system flexibility, digital agents promise to radically change the inherent characteristics of doing business electronically.
