Unusual Forms of Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract

The majority of squamous carcinomas of the larynx are composed of epidermoid elements with definite cytological changes of malignancy. In a few cases a major portion of the neoplasm shows a mesenchymal appearance without squamous cell differentiation — the spindle cell carcinoma. At the other extreme of the spectrum of malignancy is a highly differentiated epidermoid tumour, which, although behaving in an invasive fashion, is so well differentiated that a diagnosis of malignancy cannot be made on currently accepted cytological criteria. These tumours have a warty structure, which gives rise to the term verrucous squamous carcinoma. In this chapter we describe also some other less common variants of squamous cell carcinoma arising from the laryngeal mucosa, tumours that also can be encountered in other parts of the upper air and food passages. Lastly there will be a description of a well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma that arises from the epithelium of the ventriculosaccular tract of the larynx.
