Abstract
“Multicultural Society” is a catch word that turns up in a wide range of public debates in today‘s Germany, a phrase with multiple meanings as to the reality it reflects and the actions it supposedly requires. But we must know that it is a term that has been imported, by the end of the 1970s, and we must be aware of the fact that it carries with it different connotations and functions in the countries where it originated and in Germany.1 In the countries where the debates on multicultural society originated, immigration has always been in the core of their self-definition, part of their identity myths.
