Abstract

The 1980s witnessed the greatest exodus of Chinese poets to the West in the history of modern Chinese literature. Many major poets in the contemporary Chinese literary scene, such as Bei Dao, Gu Cheng, Duo Duo and Yang Lian who created new tidal waves and redefined poetry in China, have resettled in the Western landscape. In their company are quite a few lesser-known poets. Nobody knows the actual figure of Chinese poets who are now living overseas. By one unofficial account, they number more than fifty (Zhao, 1996: 25). That is a significant number in any national literature context and particularly so for China, which has also lost a considerable number of novelists, playwrights, filmmakers and other creative talents.

Culture as a strategy of survival is both transnational and translational.
