Abstract

The previous eight chapters laid the foundation of wireless communications by imparting a deeper understanding of the character of wireless channels and their impact on transmission of signals whether analog or digital. The concept of frequency reuse being necessary to increase the system capacity naturally results in interference scenarios, which when combined with other channel impairments infringes on the reliability of wireless systems. In Chapter 7, we discussed in considerable detail several signal processing techniques to make communications reliable in mobile environments. In this short chapter, mobile radio systems and services they provide are introduced. We defer details on several selected cellular systems to the ensuing chapters.
