Clay-sized phyllosilicates (sheet silicates) are the most common secondary minerals, and the term “clay minerals” has been commonly used in the past when referring to these. The history of early concepts of the composition and classification of thus defined “clay minerals”, including diverse aberrations, has been extensively reviewed by Grim (1968).
