Mucosal Immunity to Infections and its Importance in Future Vaccinology

Abstract

This chapter outlines the history of mucosal immunology and presents some new information on the subject. Mucosal immunization is noninvasive and has the potential to be a cheap and safe way to protect against multiple infectious diseases as has been demonstrated by the oral polio vaccine. It is through better understanding of the mechanisms of adaptive mucosal protection and their regulation that further advances in the development of mucosal vaccines will be made.
