Abstract

Individualism is a particularly Western ideal. Being part of a society is however as important for many non-Western and Indigenous societies as it is for so-called Western society. To be human is to live through others. Trust and reciprocity are the basis for getting things done in all societies. Distrust and competition are also options, but they need to be considered carefully, because they too bring reciprocal outcomes.
