Performance Measurement of Wireless Body Sensor Networks

Abstract

A new generation of ubiquitous computing systems integrates a variety of mobile devices on the user’s body resulting in the necessity of wireless body sensor networks (WBSN). The goal of this chapter is to characterize the transmission error condition of the WBSN and to find a suitable measurement algorithm for sensor devices of a wireless intelligent sensor network (WISE). A novel error measurement scheme is proposed that delivers very accurate results and can be implemented on small wireless sensors because of the simplicity, using timer interrupts of the microcontrollers. Then the transmission error characterization of the WBSN is analyzed based on the measurement results. Our environment provided more accurate measurements than the existing high-level solutions. According to our measurements, human body attenuation and the sensor movement degraded the error condition almost an order of magnitude.
