Abstract

Seven hundred kilometres south-east of Perth, in Western Australia, lies the town of Esperance. Today, it is a large place, with around 15,000 residents, and its spectacular stretch of Southern Ocean coastline makes it a popular destination for swimming, surfing and scuba diving; indeed, in recent times, it has been commended for having Australia’s whitest sands, its best beaches and the fearsome ‘cyclops’ wave. July and August are its wintertime months, when temperatures dip into the low sixties Celsius, and it was at this time of year, more than three decades ago, that the spotlight of international attention and publicity arrived suddenly at this isolated place.
