Vector Spaces and Linear Maps

Abstract

We introduce the concept of a vector space by using the plane R2 as a model. R2 is the set of all ordered pairs (a, b) of real numbers. (The fact that we take ordered pairs means, for example, that (1,2) ≠ (2,1).) We define an operation + of addition on R2 by
$$ (a,b) + (c,d) = (a + c,b + d). $$
