Abstract
My Abacus reviews will develop a short list of those basic and fundamental books that should be in the personal collections of serious computing professionals. I will review some of the best books on computing, those few of the thousands published that are recognized as being better than any others. The evidence of this recognition is the book’s market domination of its niche, the book’s longevity (often in successful and successive editions), and the frequency with which it is referenced by readers and writers. In most cases the superiority has been achieved against many competitors, although some books excel in their categories simply because they are alone in them.
